Atlanta Youth Academy, Atlanta

Established in 1997, Atlanta Youth Academy (AYA) is raising up a new generation of leaders ̶ and they're doing it by providing an academically rigorous and spiritually rich education to inner-city Atlanta students. Started with only one teacher and nine students, the southeast Atlanta academy is now home to 120 students, 13 teachers, a librarian, after school director, and an impressive record of achievement for students in pre-K through 8th grade.

High standards, bold expectations, and a commitment to character building and spiritual development are drivers at AYA. With a college preparatory curriculum heavily influenced by leading Atlanta independent private schools, AYA is delivering a world-class education to students from challenging and disadvantaged circumstances, those families who understand the importance of a quality education but do not possess the means to attain it. For students, the experience is joyful and eye opening.

"They make it fun," said first-year AYA student and Arete scholar, Essence Carter. "They make our learning fun."

But more than simple enjoyment and love for learning, the Atlanta Youth Academy experience is transformational for students. With a solid grounding in the Christian faith, AYA scholars are taught that life is a gift to be realized and that service to others is an essential component of fulfillment and achievement.

The formula has produced remarkable results for its urban student population. With eight graduating classes at AYA, many students have gone on to excel in some of Georgia's - and America's - finest high schools and colleges. Graduates have enjoyed success at Lovett, Westminster, Darlington, McCallie, Blair (NJ), and many of the city's best public schools, as well as Emory, Morehouse, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, and other premier universities.

In 2010-11, Atlanta Youth Academy was the school of choice for 19 Arete scholars. For more information about AYA, visit www.atlantayouthacademy.com
