Celebrating National Dog Day: Therapy Dogs Bring Comfort and Joy to Our Partner Schools
Dogs have long been known as loyal companions, but on school campuses, they’re proving to be so much more. At Arete’s partner schools, therapy dogs are not only brightening hallways but also providing comfort, encouragement, and focus to students when they need it most. This National Dog Day, we’re celebrating the four-legged friends who are making a big difference in young lives.
At Sacred Heart of Jesus School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, students were thrilled to welcome two new therapy dogs this year — Bernedoodles Elsie and Sabeth. Both hypoallergenic, Elsie and Sabeth accompany the Mercedarian nuns, who have taken on a larger role in daily school life. “Mother Rosario and Mother Isabel, serving as Assistant Principal and Disciplinarian, are frequently seen with the dogs as they move throughout the school. Students have quickly grown accustomed to seeing Elsie and Sabeth in classrooms and hallways, often stopping to offer them affection or a small treat,” Sacred Heart shares. Teachers say the dogs have had a noticeable impact, helping students focus during lessons and offering comfort during emotional moments. With their gentle, playful nature, Elsie and Sabeth have brought warmth and joy to the entire school community. After all, who can resist the calming presence of a big, fluffy dog?
Meanwhile, at Calvary Day School in Savannah, Georgia, support dog Vanna has become a beloved member of the school family. Vanna attends classes daily and is most often found in the Upper School Student Center, greeting students and staff with her calm, friendly presence. “Vanna can sense when someone is anxious or upset and will approach them with a gentle nudge to get their attention. This, of course, turns into a time for a nice back or belly rub for her, but it’s also soothing and calming for the person that she has engaged with,” Calvary Day shares. Meeting the needs of students across all grade levels, Vanna has an incredible ability to show up just when she’s needed most — and she always seems happy to be of service.
From Elsie and Sabeth’s cheerful companionship at Sacred Heart to Vanna’s intuitive comfort at Calvary Day, dogs remind us of the simple yet profound ways animals enrich our lives. On National Dog Day, we’re grateful for these furry friends who not only bring smiles but also help nurture healthier, happier school communities.
